Ms. T Friday 10-29-10 Activities

Fridays at the Chula Vista Learning Academy are a mixed bag of activities, depending on what needs to be accomplished by the end of the week, and who needs extra support in their core classes.

This Friday, students had P.E. Free Play; good times were had by all, beautiful weather. Students worked on Study Island in the media lab. They made up missing assignments with Ms. K and they completed short reading assignments for Ms. T, where they could choose to read silently, in pairs or in small groups.

Quizzes for students reading  The Outsiders and Holes were postponed until Monday.

Parents and Students, please make sure to review our policies regarding late and missed work due to absences. I posted them on the blog yesterday, and we sent home forms which were to be returned and signed today.

Have a great Hallloooooweeeeen!!!

Ms. T P.E. 10-28-10, 10-29-10

P.E. typically takes place Monday through Friday, 9:15 to 9:40, Thursdays afternoons, and Friday mornings. During the morning sessions, students walk and socialize. On Thursdays, they run and do yoga, stretching and strength training. On Fridays we have a P.E. committee which plans Friday's activities. The committee consists of a boy and a girl from each grade. They meet and pre-plan one month's worth of Friday morning activities. In October, we did Team Ball, Soccer, Football, and today, the last Friday in October, we had free play. Students took balls, hula hoops and jump ropes outside. Some played football, some played softball, some shot free throws. We also had free play yesterday, Thursday 10-28, during which time similar activities took place.  November's P.E. committee will be Courtland, Julia, Gustavo, Kaitlyn T., Jorge and Kellie. They will meet Monday morning to plan November's Fridays.

Studio22  Organic Sculptures with Photoshop

1. Pick an image you find compelling for whatever reason (best if the image is high quality - large number of dpi, or at least large in size if a 72 dpi web image)

2. Next, convert the image to a grayscale image (in Photoshop go to Image menu, Mode, Grayscale)
3. The next major adjustment you will make is to "posterize" the image (in Photoshop go to Image menu, Adjustments, Posterize, in levels box type 3)
4. When the image generate in step 3 doesn't look just right to you (doesn't appeal to your aesthetic sense), you'll need to make some fine adjustments. These adjustment processes take the longest time since you want the "perfect" image.

What to do:
  • Step backwards to the grayscale image generated in step 2 (In Photoshop go to the Edit menu, click Step Back until you get to the image desired)
  • Then adjust the brightness and contrast of the image (In Photoshop go to the Enhance menu, Adjust Brightness/Contrast, make adjustments)
  • And then repeat step 3

4a. Adjust the image by adjusting the gray tones (again starting with the image generated in Step 2, In Photoshop go to the Enhance menu, Adjust Color, Color Variations, make adjustments).

4b. You can also Posterize the image (Step 3) in more than 3 tones of gray and they use Replace Color (In Photoshop go to Enhance menu, Adjust Color, Replace Color) to reduce the number of gray tones by 'combining' adjacent grays yourself. Sometime this helps to reduce/increase unbalanced areas that might be problematic when carving.

5. Once you get the 3-tone gray image you want you'll want to size it for the organic material you will be carving.

Policies for making up work missed due to absence

October 27, 2010

Dear Students and Parents of Mountain Peak Charter school,

Due to the recently increasing number of absences, we want to clarify our policies with regard to late and missed work.

  1. Students may make up classwork and missed tests and assignments within 2 days of their return to school after an absence. For example, if a student is absent on Monday and returns Tuesday, all missed work will need to be completed by Thursday.
  2. For group projects and presentations, students may present or turn in their projects with their group upon their return, but the person in the group who was absent will receive one letter grade lower than the rest of the group.
  3. It is the responsibility of the student who has been absent to find out what work needs to be made up and to complete it within the required 2 days.
  4. If a student requires additional help outside of class due to missed lessons, it is his or her responsibility to schedule time with the teacher before or after school for extra instructional time.
  5. Lab work can not be made up.
  6. The majority of our days' activities and assignments can be found on the school blog: mpcswork.blogspot .com. The username is caastudent and the password is studio22.

We hope these guidelines are helpful to all of you, but we strongly suggest that students attend school daily in order to receive the very best education possible.

Thank you,

Ms. Trapnell
Ms. Keehan

Ms. T English Notes Thursday 10-28-10

Joy-Luck Club Students took a quiz and only Brittany, Dejaih and Illiana did well. We are in negotiations as to what will happen next. Unacceptable. Rec'd yesterday's assignment from Art.

Mockingbird Quiz  Students took a quiz and no one did well. Also, this group is in negotiations as to what will happen next. Rec'd assignment from Jacqueline.

Outsiders: Early group. Read and discussed pages 61-67, finishing chapter 5. Discussed foreshadowing. Quiz tomorrow, Friday 10-29-10. Rec'd yesterday's assignment from Victoria, Emily and Rodrigo. Fabian had already done his.

8th grade meeting: From 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. I met with the 8th graders to discuss the decline in performance in many of the students as well as the somewhat apathetic approaches to assignments and projects. Let me be clear: I'm not seeing a decline in progress and attitude in all of the 8th graders, but in quite a few of them. I told them that while I can certainly empathize with their positions in life as 8th graders, I would be remiss in performing my job as a teacher if I allowed them to skate by simply because they didn't care for the book or they were tired. I reminded them that life is comprised of completing a lot of tasks that we don't particularly enjoy. I spoke of the importance of finishing things that we start, and I reassured them that we would definitely be completing projects and reading books throughout the year that they WOULD enjoy.

Holes: Both Holes groups met together this morning. We read chapter 10 and there will be a short comprehension quiz on Friday.

Outsiders Late group: We read pages 61 to 65 together and students read pages 65 to 67 silently. There will be a short quiz tomorrow.

Wednesday, October 27, 2010

Ms. T History 10-27-10

6th grade: Students took a test on Chapter 6 in History: The 4 Mesopotamian Empires. Students were given study guides on both Monday and Tuesday. They were also told exactly what would be on the test and were given 10 minutes to study at the beginning of class.

7th and 8th grades: Students are making drama presentations today. The 7s are acting out the conflict between Pope Gregory and King Henry IV. 8s are acting out their choice of Shay's Rebellion or the Constitutional Convention. Students will be graded on the rubric posted previously this week.

Ms. T English Notes Wednesday 10-27-10

Outsiders early group: Students are writing letters from Ponyboy to his brothers describing the incident that has occurred and what he is doing about it. Fabian, Rodrigo, Emily and Victoria need to finish the assignment for homework. Joselyn is absent and will need to make it up within 3 days.

Courtland, Brittany, Art and Andrea V. will turn in their letters tomorrow. Trever, Enrique and Mariah will have until Friday to complete the assignment. Dejaih, Lilli and Helen rocked it and got finished.

Jacqueline will need to make up the assignment by Friday. Julia rocked it and got done. So did Adrian and Julian. Luke was asked to re-do his.

Holes groups, both early and late: Students wrote letters from Stanley to his mother, describing what Camp Green Lake is really like. In the early group, Jorge, Esmeralda, Marisol, Michael, Leo, Gustavo, Dayna, Nathan C, and Clarissa all got finished! Good job! In the late group, Joshua Charles, Vanessa, Jose, Danny, Andrea G. Katelyn A., Dalisa, Diana, Kellie, Joshua J.all got finished, yay!
